Hastings & Bexhill Rugby Club romped to a 42-0 win at home to second-bottom Southwark Lancers in Kent One on Saturday.

Paul Sandeman kicked three first half penalties, before a Southwark scrum was won by H&B, allowing Mark Piotrowski to score a converted try.

Piotrowski then dummied his way to a second converted try, before Tom Waring completed a 28-0 half time lead with a score in the corner.

H&B added another through Jimmy Adams after some neat work from Alex Waring, and this was converted to give the side a bonus point and a 35-0 lead. A focused performance was concluded after Kit Claughton fed Adams to complete the scoring.

Rye Rugby Club, meanwhile, suffered a narrow 24-22 defeat at Holbrook in Sussex One, thanks in part to a controversial refereeing performance.

Two seemingly legal tries were chalked off for Rye, the second coming at a crucial stage during the final 10 minutes of the match.

Captain Matt Cooke scored all three of the Rye tries which were awarded, but it was the efforts of Ben Short and Gary Edmunds which were deemed unacceptable by the referee. Jamie Moore kicked one penalty and two conversions.

See Friday’s Observers for full reports on both matches.
