South Saxons Hockey Club’s men’s first team continued its fine run of form with a comprehensive defeat of lowly Crawley II at Horntye Park.

And with both closest challengers Penguin and Hailsham losing on Saturday, Saxons have stretched their lead at the top of Sussex Open Hockey League Division One to six points.

The first half performance was one of the best I’ve been involved in.

Jamie Busbridge

After a slow start, Saxons took the lead when the league’s top goalscorer Alex Coombs drilled the ball home from the second phase of a short corner.

Soon afterwards, Saxons skipper Jamie Busbridge found himself in space at the top of the circle and smashed the ball high past a hapless goalkeeper.

Further goals from Busbridge and a brace from the in-form Olli Beal saw Saxons finish the first half five goals to the good.

As the weather deteriorated, so did the intensity of the match. Tudor Stainsby added a sixth Saxons goal after linking well with the ever-influential Jon Meredith.

Crawley picked up a deserved consolation goal before Saxons’ man of the match Chris Meredith latched on to a pinpoint pass from Paddy Cornish to complete the rout with number seven.

Busbridge said: “The first half performance was one of the best I’ve been involved in. That was really good hockey. We were looking to get double figures in the second half, but I can’t really grumble with seven.”

Saxons: Sutton, Riley, Cload, Cornish, C. Meredith, J. Meredith, Orr, Coombs, Hooton, Stainsby, Beal, Busbridge.
