Lydia Powell struck gold at the Essex Under-19 Open Badminton Tournament in Harlow on Saturday.
The Hastings-based talent, pictured, teamed up with regular partner Anna Collis to win the girls’ doubles at one of 13 events on the Badminton England U-19 Open Circuit.
Powell and Collis beat top seeded Buckinghamshire pair Lucy Mason and Nicole Burgess 21-18, 21-19 to reach the final where they defeated Bethany McDonough (Essex) and Carla Staden (Kent) 21-13, 21-15.
The girls were very much in control throughout the tournament, winning all their matches in two straight games. They will be hoping for a repeat performance at an under-17 gold tournament, also in Essex, this weekend.
Currently the number one ranked pair in the under-16 age group, 15-year-old Powell and Collis are aiming to be the number one pair in the under-17 category next season.
