The 2013 Hastings & St Leonards International Sea Angling Two-Day Beach Festival was held in contrasting conditions.
On day one, the first three hours of the match were very wet with the rain torrential at times. There was also a huge swell on the sea, causing large surf and very coloured sea.
The weather was much kinder on day two with welcome sunshine. The swell had also abated with a light offshore wind.
This year’s entry was very high and the match was nearly full with 52 anglers pegged each day. Very large numbers of fish were caught on both days with many excellent size whiting resulting in some terrific bags being weighed in.
Overall winner was Rex Palmer, who scooped the £500 first prize. He fished in the harbour section on day two and recorded a fine bag of 25lb 10oz, comprising mainly whiting with a bass, dogfish and dabs.
Jamie Copeland took the £200 prize for the heaviest fish. Fishing on the first day, he had a codling of 2lb 6oz. Kim McGreevy had top weight on day one with 42 fish for 22lb.
Colin Carey won the second day match with 47 fish, Virginia Livick claimed the ladies’ prize with 2lb 14oz, Martin Payne led the juniors with a very creditable 18lb 8oz and Gerald Sergeant was the top veteran with 15lb 7oz. Darren Bond and Colin Carey won the team prize.
The event was supported by the principal sponsor Whites Seafood Restaurant, C&G Commercial Ltd, Hastings Windows RBE Trampolines, Serenity Hair & Beauty, East Hastings SAA, Hastings & St Leonards AA and Akios.
