Snooker star Mark Davis is gearing up for a crack at world champion Ronnie O’Sullivan this afternoon (Friday).
St Leonards-based Davis will take on O’Sullivan in round one of the Champion of Champions tournament at the Ricoh Arena in Coventry from 1pm.
Televised on ITV 4, snooker’s new big-money event offers a £270,000 prize fund, with £100,000 going to the winner.
O’Sullivan reached the final of European Tour event seven, the Antwerp Open, last weekend, while Davis lost 4-3 in his opening match against 78th-ranked Thanawat Tirapongpaiboon.
Davis edged the first frame on the black only to lose the next two with his opponent making breaks of 71 and 68. World number 13 Davis won the fourth on the black and a 60 at the start of the fifth gave him a 3-2 lead, but he scored just 27 points in the subsequent two frames.
