In-form Davis set for Perry test

Mark Davis is in red hot form going into the final stages of world snooker's second most prestigious event.

The St Leonards cueman will face Joe Perry in round one of the Maplin UK Championship tomorrow (Saturday) fresh off a magnificent performance in the qualifiers.

Davis, 58th in the official world rankings and 43rd on the provisional list, came through three matches at the English Institute of Sport, Sheffield, between last Wednesday and Sunday.

The 36-year-old began with a resounding 9-2 success against Scott MacKenzie in which he won the last eight frames, a sequence which included overturning a 59-0 deficit to clinch frame eight.

He followed that up by recording an excellent 9-7 victory over Roewe Shanghai Masters champion and provisional number 18 Ricky Walden after the opening session had ended 4-4.

Davis then crushed former World Championship finalist Nigel Bond 9-2, opening up a 6-2 cushion in the first session before finishing things off with the aid of a century break in frame 10.

More of the same will be required when he takes on Perry at the Telford International Centre in an event televised by the BBC. The first session will start at 1pm and the second from 7pm.

Perry is 12th in the official rankings and seventh on the provisional list, and impressed in reaching the semi-finals of the Sky Sports-televised Premier League Snooker recently.

The winner of the match between Davis and Perry will face reigning champion and world number one Ronnie O'Sullivan or Rory McLeod, who knocked out Jimmy White in qualifying.

Former Benson & Hedges champion Davis has now won 13 matches in the first five ranking events on the main world tour this season and is set for another rise up the provisional rankings.
