South Saxons moved up to second in the South Hockey League Sussex Area - Division One table, following a stylish 4-1 win over a strong and determined Lewes III side.

Despite dominating possesion in the first half, it remained goalless until Jamie Busbridge’s 16-yard effort opened the scoring just after the break.

Skipper Paddy Cornish then rounded the goalkeeper for number two, before Busbridge clamied his second with a smart finish.

Man of the match George Eldridge powerfully flicked into the corner to make it four, after Saxons had conceded against the run of play.

The win means Saxons could go top this weekend, if results go their way. They still have leaders Brighton & Hove III at home to play, and Cornish insists the side are ready for the home stretch.

“It’s up to us now,” Cornish said. “If we win all of our remaining matches, we’re champions. That starts on Saturday against Horsham III. If results go our way, we might even be top by Saturday night.”

Saxons: Deaves, Cload, Reed, Ford, Orr, Coombes, Eldridge, Stainsby, Burnett, Busbridge, Cornish. Sub: Bunday. For a full report, see Friday’s Hastings Observer.
