South Saxons Hockey Club could face a title shoot-out at the end of the season.

Their top two clash away to Horsham II was postponed last weekend due to the freezing weather and is likely to be rearranged for Saturday March 31 - the weekend after the scheduled finish of the campaign.

But with second-placed Saxons currently four points behind leaders Horsham II, the Hastings club will need to better their rivals’ results over the next six games to ensure they still have a chance of top spot.

Saxons captain Paddy Cornish said: “We’ve got to win every game and just hope we’ve still got a chance (going into) that game. We can’t afford to slip-up anywhere.”

Saxons have won two and lost two South Hockey League Sussex Area - Division One matches since the turn of the year, and Cornish is well aware that the next few weeks provide the perfect chance to regain their form.

Their next four games are all against bottom five sides and tomorrow (Saturday) could be key to how the season pans out because Saxons are at home to 10th-placed Southwick while Horsham travel to third-placed Lewes III.

“The next three weeks we’ve got a good chance to get our minds right and get back to where we were before Christmas,” added Cornish, who wasn’t surprised or disappointed last weekend’s game was called-off.

“I wasn’t surprised at all to be honest and I’m hoping it could be a blessing because I don’t think we’re in the right frame of mind to be playing them. The last few weeks since Christmas we’ve not been playing well.”
