Gym group Race for Life

Gym goers at Falaise are joining forces this year and taking part in Cancer Research UK's Race for Life.

The team of 15 ladies has been put together by trainer Julie Cowan, a race veteran of two years.

Julie will be running this year's race on June 15 in Alexandra Park with her 10 year-old niece Holly Courter, friend Deborah Fuller, and god-daughter Jessica Fuller, 10.

She said: "I had these 15 ladies on a fitness journey. A lot of them thought they were not getting anywhere, so I thought we'd do the Race for Life as an incentive.

"I've been meeting up with them once a week in the park. It is about a sense of achievement, and the fun of doing it. I'm very proud of them."

Sam Turner is running the race for a few members of her family who have suffered from cancer, particularly her Grandad, Bob, who died two years ago.

Sam, 24, from Dane Road, has been visiting Falaise since November.

She said: "There's a great team spirit here, mainly because the staff are so good.

"I've never got fit, and I thought, I'll do it this year, and my ultimate goal was the Race for Life.

"My family are really proud of me because I've never done anything like this before."

Christina Bowen's mum Mary Ingram has had a cancer scare, spurring Christina to run the race for her.

Christina, from St Leonards, said: "Julie told me about and I thought it would be a great incentive to lose weight. My mum is proud of me."

Jodi Timms, 24, has been coming three times a week to Falaise since October 2007, and is running the race for her nan Josie Cottingham.

Jodi, from Hughenden Road, said: "I wanted to do the Race for Life last year but didn't have the bottle to do it on my own. When I heard they were doing it here it was just the motivation, to have someone to do it with.

"My nan had breast cancer and had a mastectomy a few years ago. Thankfully she's a survivor."

Louise South from St Leonards, is looking forward to a fun day.

She said: "It seemed like a really nice thing to do, and it motivated me to come to the gym and meet people. It seems like a really fun day."

Paula Stanley started exercising a year ago because she was doing too much sitting down at work.

Paula, 60, said: "I've never done anything like this before and I thought it would be a personal achievement.

"I'm looking forward to it - I just hope the weather is nice for it."

As of this week 2,402 Hastings people had signed up to the Race for life, with 998 spaces left. Entries close June 11.

To sign up call 0871 6412282 or go to www.raceforlife.org.
