Great win for young athletes
THE under-17s of Hastings Athletic Club made the most of home advantage to win the second match in the Youth Athletes League Division One South season.
Hastings propelled up the table after rattling up a points tally of 362.5 to finish well clear of Ashford (321), Southend (267.5) and Bexley (263).
A particularly warm day inspired quick times on the track with the under-17 men winning 10 out of the 18 events.
Simon Shephard finished first in both the A-string 100m (11.9) and 200m (24.00), as did Joe Corrigan in the B-string 100m (12.1) and 200m (24.5). Not to be outdone Lee Jules and Simon Baker won both 1,500m races in an identical time of 4.15.5. Jules also managed to win the 3,000m (9.36.0).
Alex Ambridge ran a personal best of 2.03.8 to win the A-string 800m, David Cooper took the 1,500m steeplechase (5.01.4) and Callum Head courageously tackled and won the B-string 100m hurdles. The 4x100m relay team of Head, Corrigan, Jules and Shephard romped home in 48 seconds dead. In the field, Adam Nichols jumped 1.60m to win the B-string high jump.
The under-15 boys middle distance runners stood out with George Bond winning the 3,000m (9.51.3) and Stefan Emery taking the B-string (10.05.8), while Jeth Light marked his return from a broken ankle by romping clear in the B-string 1,500m (4.54.7). Peter Henworth came second in the 800m (57.6 pb), a position emulated by Michael West in the 200m (26.0 pb). West went one better though to triumph in the A-string high jump (1.60m). Shane Baker starred for the under-13 boys, winning both the 100m and 200m.
Kerri Morgan performed exceptionally well for the under-17 women, bagging three first places in the 100m, 300m (42.1), and 800m (2.26.3). Rachel Fittal won the B-string 100m, while Jo Pickard took the B-string 200m (30.9) and A-string discus (21.33m). Kelly Coombes won both the A-string shot put (7.78m) and the B-string discus (18.77m), while Claire Burnham claimed the B-string long-jump (3.64m). The quartet of Pickard, Fittal, Burnham and Morgan also won the 4x100m relay (55.70).
The under-15 girls also scored good points with Nicki Avery winning both the A-string 100m (13.4 pb) and 200m (27.2), while Megan Williams claimed the B-string 200m (28.7). Lara Whittaker won the javelin with a throw of 27.66m. The 4x100m relay team of Avery, Lucy Baker, Williams and Grace Shephard stormed around the track in a winning time of 54.7.
The under-13 girls were also strong with Laura Hind winning the A-string 800m (2.45.0) and Stacey Clusker the B-string (3.00.2). Laura McBrien was first in the B-string 1,200m (4.30.6), while Hannah Coombs bagged the A-string shot put (8.80m).
