Hastings United’s footballers must be at their best to defeat higher grade Merthyr Town in the FA Trophy, according to manager Garry Wilson.

The two clubs will meet again at The Pilot Field tonight (Tuesday) after the second round qualifying tie was abandoned due to a waterlogged pitch at half time on Saturday.

Merthyr - who play their football one level further up the non-league pyramid than United - were 2-0 up at the time despite having a player sent-off.

Wilson said: “They’re a good side and we’ve got to play at our best. We made a couple of errors for the goals and this will learn us a lesson.”

Despite the continuing unsettled weather, the game is expected to go ahead at the second time of asking. Kick-off at The Pilot Field is 7.45pm.

United groundsman Simon Rudkins wrote on social media site Twitter this lunchtime: “The inspecting referee is happy with the condition of the pitch for tonight’s game @hastingsufc v @MerthyrTownFC.”

They’re a good side and we’ve got to play at our best.

Normal admission prices will apply for the rearranged fixture, but United have said they will contact the FA on the matter of refunding the cost of admission to the original match.

United’s third round match at home to Sittingbourne in the Ryman League Alan Turvey Trophy - which was scheduled for tonight - will now be played at a later date.
