Westfield Football Club produced what manager Jack Stapley described as its best performance of the season to end a three-month losing run away from home.

Two second half goals from Emmanuel Okunja gave the Westies a 2-1 victory at Ferring in Macron Store Southern Combination Football League Division Two on Saturday.

Stapley said: “It was a brilliant result and it was our best performance of the season for the whole 90 minutes without a doubt. We worked hard and it was a lot more comfortable than the score suggests.”

The first half ended goalless, although Westfield had two efforts cleared off the line and a goal disallowed for what Stapley considered a questionable offside.

In the second half, Westfield - who fielded just one player over the age of 25 - drew first blood when Okunja swept the ball home at the end of a well-worked move down the right.

The same player doubled Westfield’s advantage with a superb goal. New signing Jordan Harris played the ball in to Okunja, who beat two defenders and struck the ball home from 20 yards for his fourth goal in two games.

Ferring pulled one back from probably Westfield’s only defensive lapse of the afternoon, but a third Westfield goal looked more likely than a Ferring equaliser in the closing stages.

Westfield: Cullip; Winter, Willis, Durrant, Harris; Ward (Bossom), Hurst, Okunja; Sotoyinbo (Shaw), Martellini (McGurk), Dadswell.

Seventh-placed Westfield, who are just six points off the top, will host leaders Roffey this coming Saturday. Kick-off at The Parish Field is 2pm.
