Finch seeks consistency

Hastings Priory captain Jason Finch is targeting consistency going into a keenly-anticipated derby tomorrow (Saturday).

Priory visit local rivals Eastbourne buoyed by last weekend's win at home to Haywards Heath which lifted them outside the Sussex Cricket League Premier Division's bottom two.

"We need to just get a bit of consistency in the league," said Finch, the only Priory batsman in the division's 25 leading runscorers. Finch is seventh with 331 runs at an average of 55.17.

Priory are now third-from-bottom, and although five points ahead of Haywards Heath with two games in hand, there is still plenty of work to be done to retain their top flight status.

Finch went on: "If we go into it complacent, we'll lose the game and suddenly all our work from the week before will be undone. But I won't allow that to happen."

Tomorrow's clash promises to be an exciting affair on the basis of the previous meeting between the two sides at Horntye Park Sports Complex on the opening day of the season.

That match couldn't have been tighter as Eastbourne totalled 250-9 in reply to Priory's 250-7, the first of two Eastbourne games this season in which the scores have finished level.

"We always have good battles with them," continued Finch, "and if it's anything like the beginning of the season it's going to be a cracker. I'm looking forward to it.

"We're likely to play an Eastbourne side on Saturday that's full of their county pros and it will be a totally different type of opposition (from Haywards Heath)."

Priory expect to make two changes from the Heath game with Pepler Sandri taking over from Tim van Noort with the new ball and Freddie Hulbert replacing the unavailable James Pooley.

Then on Sunday, Priory will be joined by Division Two sides Bexhill and Glynde & Beddingham in a three-way Sussex Twenty20 Cup fixture at Horntye Park Sports Complex.

First up at 12.30pm will be Bexhill against Glynde and the winners will face Priory at 4pm for a place in finals' day at Preston Nomads CC on Sunday August 9.

Finch will give his troublesome knee a rest so James Beeny will lead quite a young Priory team likely to include Sussex under-17 bowler Matt Cooke and Sussex under-16 player Tom Harvey.

Finch added: "It would be nice to get to finals' day, but I'm giving quite a few of our main first team players a rest. We'll still be good enough to beat either Glynde or Bexhill if we play well."
