Davis sparkles in Sheffield
Mark Davis produced a magnificent performance in world snooker's second most prestigious event yesterday.
The St Leonards hot-potter hammered Scott MacKenzie 9-2 in round two of the Maplin UK Championship Qualifiers at the English Institute of Sport, Sheffield.
Davis was actually 2-1 down at one stage before reeling off the last five frames of the morning session, including the last in which he trailed 59-0, to lead 6-2.
Thirty-six-year-old Davis, 58th on the official world rankings and 43rd on the provisional list, completed the job with the minimum of fuss by taking the first three frames of the evening session.
Davis will face Ricky Walden in round three on Friday for the right to progress to the fourth and final round on Sunday.
Walden is 35th in the official rankings and 18th on the provisional list after winning the Roewe Shanghai Masters in October, beating world number one Ronnie O'Sullivan 10-8 in the final.
Davis has won 11 matches on the main world tour already this season, a sequence which began with a run to the last 16 of the Northern Ireland Trophy during August.
