Davis run comes to an end
Mark Davis' magnificent run in snooker's Northern Ireland Trophy came to an end on Thursday evening.
The St Leonards player, 58th on the official rankings, was beaten 5-2 by seventh-ranked Allister Carter in round three.
Davis lost the first two frames in Belfast, but worked his way back to level terms by the mid-session interval after sneaking a tight fourth frame.
Carter proved his top eight credentials, however, by reeling off the next three frames to book his place in Friday's quarter-finals.
It was, nonetheless, a splendid start to the 2008-09 main world tour season for Davis, who ended the 2007-08 campaign by winning a place in the 888.com World Snooker Championship.
The 36-year-old stunned world number 11 Ding Junhui 5-4 in the previous round having knocked out 20th-ranked Joe Swail by the same score in round one.
Last year's snooker.de Open winner Davis only got into the event by coming through two matches in qualifying at Pontin's Prestatyn earlier this month.
