Weekend football round-up

Carl Morris kept a clean sheet for Westfield

Sidley United’s frustrations continued as their Sussex County Football League Division One game at home to Shoreham on Saturday fell foul to another postponement.

The Blues have played just once in 2013 - back on the first weekend of the year - and despite passing an initial inspection, the referee decided the Gullivers surface wasn’t fit for action. All being well, John Lambert’s side will travel to neighbours Rye United tomorrow (Tuesday).

In Division Two, Westfield fought out an encouraging 0-0 draw with second-placed Littlehampton Town - a side they’ve lost to on three occasions this season already.

Despite being the better side for the majority of the contest, Westfield couldn’t find a breakthrough. Defender Carl Morris appeared in goal for the hosts, who kept their first clean sheet in 14 games to claim a decent point.

In the same division, Little Common lost 5-3 at home to leaders Newhaven, having come back from 0-3 down at one stage during the second half.

Chris Cumming-Bart had a spot-kick saved at 0-0, but the hosts were two behind at the break. Following a third for the visitors, a Jamie Crone brace and one from Cumming-Bart effort meant the game was all-square.

However, Common couldn’t hold on despite their brave fighback, and two more goals meant Newhaven became the first side to win at The Rec this season.

Bexhill United also fell at home, losing 3-1 against Loxwood, who sit in seventh place - one behind the Pirates. After the visitors gained the lead midway through the opening period, Steve Morris levelled matters before the interval.

The sides were set to share the points heading into the final seven minutes, but two Loxwood strikes gave them all three points.
