Biggest match ever in Rye

Rye United’s FA Vase clash against Guernsey on Saturday has been labelled ‘the biggest football match ever to be played in the town’.

Though United reached the quarter-finals of the prestigious national competition two seasons ago, all of their nine matches in that memorable run were played away from The Salts.

Therefore, tomorrow’s last 32 tie between Rye and the Islanders officially becomes the most important home fixture in the club’s 74-year history.

And Quarterboys boss Scott Price is hopeful it won’t be the last FA Vase tie this season. “If we play well, and defend well - which is key, we can beat anyone on our day,” Price said.

“We know Guernsey are strong, but so are we. We can definitely win this match. I’m aware that it’s our biggest ever home game, so hopefully we can win it, progress, and even generate some more money for the club.”

Jack Franklin is banned and Dominic Clarke is cup-tied having played for Sidley United in the same competition earlier this season. Chris Gould has left the club to join AFC Uckfield.

See tomorrow’s Rye Observer for full coverage, including an interview with Rye captain Anthony Storey.
