Bexhill to host Rye home opener?

The Polegrove in Bexhill seems the most likely venue at this stage for Rye United's opening home game.

Rye's home at The Salts is out of action following the fire which destroyed the Sidney Allnutt Pavilion in the early hours of Saturday August 21.

An alternative venue will therefore have to be found for the Sussex County Football League Division One match against Ringmer which is scheduled for next Saturday (September 11).

Chairman Clive Taylor said: "Bexhill is the most likely and the most practical. Although we've had offers from Little Common and Westfield, their grounds don't conform to Division One regulations."

There is a possibility, however, that reserve team fixtures may take place at Common or Westfield. Taylor added that, unlike in Division Two, the league can't force teams to play Division One matches on Sundays.

As of Wednesday evening, Rye were still awaiting an official response from The Salts landowner Rother District Council about installing temporary accommodation. The club wants to put up portable buildings - similar to those at Westfield - so that games can be played at The Salts as soon as possible.

The full article will appear in tomorrow's Rye Observer.
