Bexhill Cricket Club is determined to finish the season strongly, even if a first Sussex Premier League title for 19 years proves beyond them.

Third-placed Bexhill are 44 points behind leaders Roffey after losing at home to the two-time reigning champions on Saturday and beating the Sussex Development XI on Sunday.

They trail second-placed Cuckfield by 25 points with 90 available from the final three matches, the second of which is at home to Cuckfield.

Bexhill captain Johnathan Haffenden said: “I think we can win all three and that’s what we’ll be targeting. In Premier League cricket anything can happen. Roffey only need to have maybe two little hiccups.

“We just need to make sure we do what we did Sunday again and just see what happens. We’ve had a good season, there’s no doubt about it.”

Bexhill need 56 more points to eclipse their total when finishing fourth last year - their best result since winning the league in 1997.

“We’ll still turn up and do what we need to do,” continued Haffenden. “That’s the good thing about having a young side; everyone’s hungry, no-one likes losing and everyone’s got their own personal goals.

“If the boys keep putting in their performances, it will just show how far they’ve come and how good they are.

“It’s another big learning curve for all the boys. We’ve progressed in some of the things we wanted to, now we don’t want to have these days where we get rolled for the early 100s.

“We just wanted to progress on last year. You always want to win it because that’s what you play cricket for, to win things, but it’s a forward step again.”

Bexhill will go in search of their 10th win of the campaign today (Saturday) when they travel to a third-from-bottom Brighton & Hove side which still has a bit of work to do to avoid relegation.

Bexhill will make at least one change to their side. Key man Sam Roberts will miss the game as he’s had to fly back to Texas for a couple of days.

“It will be a massive loss, but we’ve got other people that are more than capable of doing it and it’s their time to show their worth,” added Haffenden.

Elsewhere tomorrow, Roffey are at home to bottom club Worthing and Cuckfield entertain mid-table Preston Nomads.
