Westfield Football Club has been left in a state of shock after its clubhouse was burned down.
Fire crews were called to the club's Parish Field base at 2.46am on Sunday, little more than three hours after the conclusion of a successful fundraising event at the Main Road venue.
The wooden clubhouse, which is thought to date back to the early 1970s, is almost completely flattened with only the home changing room, officials' changing room and the adjoining stand still standing.
Photos, trophies and other items of memorabilia have all been destroyed, although a shirt bearing the name of Graeme Kempster, a Westfield player tragically killed in a car crash in August 2006, has somehow survived the wreckage.
Westfield's joint manager Tony Harris said: "It's a complete shock. It's been there a long time and it means a lot to people."
Westfield's first team won 7-0 at home to Midhurst & Easebourne in the Sussex County League Division Two Challenge Cup on Saturday.
