SID Smith will bid to become West Hill Boxing Club's first national champion for 10 years this weekend.

The southern area winner, who is blossoming under the guidance of Paul Martin, will attempt to emulate 1996 National Schoolboy Champion Stefan Symes in the final of the Golden Gloves Championship on Sunday March 26.
Smith will go head-to-head with northern area champion Stephen Pealing (Transport ABC, Liverpool) in the 14 years, 52 kilos category at Knottingley Leisure Centre, West Yorkshire.
"We don't know anything about him," confessed West Hill coach Dave Bishop, "other than the fact that he's not as experienced as Sid, but he's got a good record. He's a good boy, but Sid's a class act and I've got every confidence in him if he can just box to his potential."
Before then, junior Conroy Gaynor will face Billy May (Finchley) - a British Champion this year - on a dinner show at the Effingham Park Hotel in Copthorne on Friday. Former World Heavyweight Champions Mike Tyson and Frank Bruno are due to be in attendance.
