A late rally wasn't enough to keep Mark Davis' 888.com World Snooker Championship hopes alive.
The St Leonards cueman suffered a 10-3 first round exit at the hands of Mark Williams despite winning three of the last five frames.

Welshman Williams, the champion in 2000 and 2003, looked far more like his old self as he raced into an 8-0 lead at The Crucible Theatre, Sheffield.

But Davis, the provisional number 66, did at least avoid being only the second player in Crucible history to be whitewashed by bagging the last frame of the opening session on Monday night.

He lost the first frame of session two on Tuesday afternoon, but refused to throw the towel in and won the next two in front of the BBC television cameras.

Provisional number 26 Williams took frame 13, however, to seal a second round clash with Ronnie O'Sullivan or Liu Chuang.
