Stuart Holland was the pride of England after emerging victorious at an international bowls competition.
The Bexhill-based talent, 20, won the junior (under-25) singles in the British Isles Bowls Council Championships at Llandrindod Wells BC, Wales.

Asked how his latest achievement compared to the many others which have gone before, Polegrove Bowls Club member Holland said: "It's by far the best."

Holland won both his matches 21-17 at an event which brings together the national champions of England, Guernsey, Ireland, Jersey, Scotland and Wales.

After receiving a bye through the preliminary round, Holland successfully negotiated a see-saw semi-final against Jersey BC bowler Jamie McDonald despite a below par performance.

He was 6-1 and 9-6 down before piecing together a run of eight unanswered shots to lead 14-9 only to fall behind again at 15-16.

But Holland upped his game when he really needed to and clinched his place in the final by virtue of winning five of the last six ends.

Fired-up by his surprise omission from this year's England junior squad, he produced a much-improved display against Iain McLean (Blackwood Victoria BC).

The key to his win was a 7-1 run from 12-11 to 19-12 and, although he was pegged back slightly by last year's Scottish junior and senior number one, Holland did enough to get over the line.

Holland, who wished to acknowledge the sponsorship of John O'Conner, booked his place in the England team by winning the EBA National Under-25s Singles Championship last summer.

His triumph helped England to overall glory taking into account all the scores from the junior singles, singles, pairs, triples and fours.
