Published Date: 02 April 2008
Local Liberal Democrats will be launching their manifesto for the Hastings Borough Council elections at 7pm this evening, at the Liberal Democrat Centre, 9 London Road, St Leonards.
The event will be hosted by Lib Dem Group Leader Cllr Richard Stevens and myself. I hope you will come along – you will be very welcome.

If you can't get there, then let me give you a flavour of the manifesto itself.

Liberal Democrats have a vision for Hastings and St Leonards.

We will strive to make our area a 'safe and thriving place to live in, offering a high quality of life, a strong economy and a sustainable future, founded upon our unique heritage and seaside location, and supported by social, economic, cultural and environmental regeneration'.

And we have set our priorities for ensuring that this happens in a way that engages rather than alienates local people. You may well have had these through your letterbox already, but our priorities are as follows:

• Lib Dems will be community representatives—all year round; not just at election time

• We'll tell it straight—no spin and no gimmicks

• We will work for a cleaner, greener and safer Hastings & St Leonards

• We will restore Town Hall democracy and value for money

• We will bring decision-making closer to local people

• We will fight poverty and make the arts and culture a top priority.
We want local people to be clear about what they are voting for when it comes to the election on 1 May. We believe that there is now very little difference between what the Labour Party and the Conservatives are offering you.

And we believe that Hastings cannot afford a return to the unjustifiable Council Tax hikes of the Labour Party, and the ongoing administrative incompetence of local Conservatives.

We are saying that it's time for a change.

It's time for a Lib Dem Council.

Well Done Nick! Get to it !!

Yes , Nick …very laudable aims. What is not clear is to how all this would be funded . Promises are cheap ; delivery is expensive.
You make great play of democratic practices , no spin and being different than the other parties.
Yet for some reason you have declined to answer the basic question I mentioned last week. ( As below) . Forgive me for being old fashioned Nick , but I believe action speaks louder than words ! (Spot the conflict ?)
So now we know ..there is very little difference between New Labour ,the Tories and the Lib Dems !

MP’S EXPENSES :
The Euro MP’s committee has stated that EuroMP’s are to face a family jobs ban. Apparently many are using as a tax wheeze and other abuses.
I would like to ask each of the parliamentary candidates whether they support such measures being implemented in the UK ?
Michael Foster employs his wife as a secretary. Are you Michael prepared to match your pro- European credentials and push for the measure to be introduced in the UK ?

Won't be able to make tonight ..prior engagement.

I note though that you will restore Town Hall value for money. I'm a little perplexed as recently the Lib/Dems joined in supporting Labour with the wasteful £50000 Climat Cahange expenditure.

Strange way of getting value for money !

Song for Nick :

Bob Dyaln : "The Times They are a Changing"

They may have been for Bob ...but not the people of Hastings !

A thorough investigation, with those responsible being accountable for their actions, would be a good start, Nick. Although I believe that it was not just cabinet members who were responsible for this, but other representatives who played their part in blocking this. Thus deceiving the public.

The people of Hastings and St Leonards want representatives who will vote with integrity and principles which are right and decent. That's why I feel that perhaps only Independent councillors will, do better, as they don't always have to toe the party line. However, the Libdems have some good policies at a national level and hopefully, if the libdems locally can rise above the cronyism within the parties and deliver, these manifesto promises, then 'things will, get better'!

In case any one is wondering, we were actually referring to the recycling Fiasco, but with the Lab/Tory pact, it could have referred to a number of disasters, which have occurred.

Darryl,

Hastings 02/04/2008 16:03:57
Yes ..would the Lib Dems if elected reopen the £500000 recycling issue ? ( Someone ahs actually asked this on your board before )

Do they agree or diagree with Kramer re gettint the council to pay for the George St post office ?

Nick. Are the Libdems, fielding a candidate in West St Leonards as thus far the only literature or face we have seen, has been the New Labour guy. ?

Apologies for lateness Darryl - I have been out of the country over the past couple of weeks.

In answer to your question, I believe that a whole host of processes in the appointment of parliamentary staff should be overhauled. As a Liberal Democrat, I don't often subscribe to blanket bans. But I do believe that appointments to MPs offices should be organised by some sort of independent body, which can ensure the application of equal opportunities policies.

Evening OMR. Just a note to say that the Lib Dems are contesting all the wards in the forthcoming elections. Tricia Kennelly is the candidate in West St Leonards. You can contact her via the Lib Dem Centre, 9 London Road.

Thank's Nick. I will contact Tricia as, I have concerns re cars, racing down Field Way.
Also agree with any thing which can ensure the application of equal opportunities policies.
