I am terribly disappointed by the state of the showers at the Summerfields Leisure Centre.
In fact I have been for some time. I have even filled in a customer feedback form – to no, seeming, avail!
You see I go there to swim on a regular basis. Recently, I have been doing my swimming challenge for Marie Curie Cancer Care, in memory of my mum, who died of ovarian cancer last October. There is still time to sponsor me! See this link:
http://my.artezglobal.com/personalPage.aspx?registrationID=234680&LangPref=en-CAI had invited my Labour and Conservative counterparts to join in on this challenge. I have not heard back from Michael Foster. Amber Rudd cried modesty, but kindly provided sponsorship instead.
I had thought that this would have been a good cross-party opportunity, not only to do something for a good cause, but to extol the virtues of low impact exercise as part of a national drive towards better public health.
I have to say that we need to put some serious effort into raising the standards of our municipal leisure facilities if we are to encourage local people to get more active than they otherwise would. We have to do it at the same time as making these activities affordable.
This is the kind of thing that regeneration monies should properly be used for. It would be a tangible outcome, when so much money appears to be frittered away with little to show for it.
In a country like ours we should be able to access high quality leisure facilities as a universal service. As such, these facilities should be seen as part of our public health drive – as satellite parts of the NHS.
This is the kind of radical thinking that is needed in our country.
Labour is too tired to make it happen. The Tories are too posh and out of touch.
It is only the Lib Dems that have the requisite combination of ideas and energy that will make this happen.
