As I have been canvassing across the town over the last weeks, there are issues that come up time and time again.
Two regular topics of discussion are the regeneration of Hastings and the Council Tax.

I have to say that I can go on for hours about these issues, so I'll try my hardest to be disciplined, and not stray too far over my word limit!

There has been a big row in the Observer over the last couple of weeks between the Conservative and Labour Parties about the money that is available to Hastings and St Leonard's for regeneration purposes. The Tories say that the Government has cut the funding, and Labour says Hastings and St Leonard's has never had it so good.

What neither Party admits to however, is that they have each been responsible over the last two Councils (at least) for failing to get the best value for the money that has been given to Hastings.

They have failed in different ways.

The Labour Party when in office was responsible for the infamous £1 million overspend on recycling and the various attempts to give away prime land in the area as part of regeneration dealings. The Tories in office have failed to exert any meaningful managerial influence over Sea Space and allowed the Council Tax to keep on rising.

The Liberal Democrats on Hastings Borough Council, under the leadership of Richard Stevens, have tried throughout to ensure that the family silver hasn't been sold by the other two parties. Only recently Richard Stevens has been fighting to settle the Council's account with the Foreshore Trust in a way that does not lose major assets, and protects the rights of local fishermen (and fisherwomen).

And then there is the Council Tax. The iniquitous Council Tax.

Readers take note that the Liberal Democrats are the only political party committed to abolishing this unfair tax. We would replace it with a local income tax based on people's ability to pay.

In my column last week I suggested that Hastings residents might be asking themselves whether or not Labour's promises can be trusted.

It would not surprise me if they are also asking themselves why, when the district has received one of the best national settlements in respect of Government funding, we still have one of the highest levels of Council Tax in the country? Not to mention why, with all the extra Government cash, we are slipping down the deprivation league tables.

The answer lies in the failure of previous Councils to manage change within the borough effectively.

I strongly believe that the Liberal Democrats are the only real alternative to the Labour-Tory consensus.

We have shown nationally and locally that we are listening to the priorities of local people and offer different solutions.

It's time for a change.

It's time for a Lib Dem Council.

Good Morning Nick.
Firstly, I do think that you should have been allowed to join in the post office debate with Punch and Judy.Particularly as Richard stevens does so much in the old town area. Re canvassing and leafleting, perhaps yourself and the west st leonards candidate might make their presence felt a bit more past the Burton side and round the more chav parts, where I live as, new labour/neo conservatives are really concentrating their efforts here. a few Libdem posters would go down a treat. Bye for now!

The hard working tax payers have been let down by both the Tories and New Labour. We remember the Conservative years of cuts. The weakening of the trade unions, the miners strikes. Maggie Thatcher, the childrens' milk snatcher. The recession, loss of homes.Spin, lies, sleaze....ugh!!
This reign of terror was dreadful. Then for a brief while the public breathed a sigh of relief when a new Government came into office. 11 years later we find we have the same thing but with a new labour war mongering Government. Who in addition also are eroding away our freedom of speech and civil liberties.
On a local level, Peter Praggers and his Trotsky chums are committed to wasting the taxpayers money, raising our council tax bills and keeping quite on the Hastings front about the Recycling Fiasco.
FOSTER and Tory chums out!!

Nick ….Excellent points on Council Tax. It is iniquitous and regressive , hitting those least able to pay. Neither of the other main parties have begun to address this issue. The Lib/Dems, nationally, deserve credit and support for their policy on this.

However I have concerns locally. You mention the Recycling issue and quite rightly castigate the main parties. However talking with an independent cllr I am given to believe the Liberal Paul Smith on the recycling committee voted against an inquiry ie. with the other two main parties. Somewhat diminishes your comments. Following on from last week when I responded to you request for clarification as to the type on inquiry ; are the Lib/Dems if elected , prepared to endorse such an inquiry ?

I have also mentioned the misguided and inappropriate Climate Change expenditure of some £50000. The Lib/Dems joined with Labour and defeated the Conservatives on this issue. I hardly think that this represents a fiscally responsible party and demonstrates that the Liberals too are prepared to engage a Labour/Liberal consensus.

I agree managing change is key. However as regards monies allocated ….much comes from unelected quangos ..the brainchild of Labour, and the council does not have full control. A problem which the Liberals also have.

Another problem re council tax has been that in addition to bad management the central government grants for Council Tax have been practically the lowest in the country for years , with the exception of election year . Surprise .surprise !

Locally I’m not convinced. Nationally you may have a case.

You forget the state the country was in pre Thatcher.

Economically Britain was put back on its feet ,and , if you read any univeristy level Economics book re that period you will find that unlike today the hardworking working classes actually benefitted. Period.

But the Libdems have never proposed anything constructive in Hastings Council have they. Its just 'after the event' moans or combined with reasons to leave everything alone and don't change anything. Old fashioned non-interventionists who just see HBC as a savings bank don't really deserve politial support. To tell you the truth I'm not sure its even a political party, since they'll have anybody its more of a franchise opperation specialising in the retrospective critique

Darryl has a valid point about Paul Smith from the Libdems voting against the inquiry with New Labour Councillor Webb who also blocked the decision to have this investigated.Peter Pragnell, Conservative, also said no to an inquiry. There were some good articles about this in the news paper and any one at the meeting saw what had happened. Locally we are still waiting for Nick Perry to reply to what the libdems will do about this fiasco.

Yeah thank's for that Darryl. I took your advise and trolled through the uni library but was unsucessful in my quest to find and a pre Thatcher Economic book that actually sung her praises. Eventually, however I tracked down the 1 copy that existed- .However the powers that be at Eton do not let it out on loan!

Ahh! How sweet, the Adoreable Martin Salcombe is back.
He's concerned that the Liberals are becoming to egalitarian- something that is entirely new to new labour. Don't you have to belong to the old boys network as part of the selection criteria for the new labour/tory party!
