Labour's promises and the BNP

How reliable are Labour's promises? That is one of the questions that many Hastings residents will be asking themselves as we approach the Borough elections on 1 May, and as various political letters and leaflets land on the doormat.
If they have not already, I think many people will come to the conclusion that they are not reliable at all.

There are many examples at a national level of the trustworthiness of Labour – the Iraq War being the starkest. But there can be no better example in relation to local issues than the Labour MP, Michael Foster, voting (again) to support the Government's chaotic and damaging approach to the Post Office network.

(If you want to know what the Lib Dems would do about this, there is a link to our policy in my column of 22 January 2008].

In January I acknowledged Michael's hard work in respect of the threatened closures. But what value this work, if, at the end of the day, Michael will get into line and vote as the Whips tell him? I believe that he is in acute danger of losing respect in the constituency and being viewed as a New Labour patsy.

But what has this to do with the BNP I hear you ask?

Well you may have read the Observer article about the BNP fielding a record number of candidates for the coming elections. They will be fielding four candidates. And it is no surprise that they will be standing in the four most deprived wards.

Whilst the BNP have the democratic right to do this, let us make no mistake, it is a travesty for Hastings that they believe that they may win electoral success here.

And why do they feel like this? It is my view that they think they will pick up the votes of working people who feel abandoned by Labour.

They will focus on the fact that inequality has increased under the Labour Government, and they will, ever so subtly, introduce their ugly racial politics.

It is the Labour Party that must take responsibility for this. And I believe it is from Labour, not the Conservatives, that the BNP will be seeking to take votes on 1 May.

I believe that in order to combat the insidious message of the BNP, mainstream political parties must demonstrate that they have the interests of local people (and most importantly, the interests of the most marginalised and excluded local people) at heart, and that they will deliver for them.

Make no mistake, this is not the forté of the Conservatives.

The Liberal Democrats launched our local manifesto last week, and I gave a summary of it in my column. The fight against poverty remains a key priority for us. We believe in building a society where there is freedom from poverty; freedom from 'big state' interference; and freedom to achieve your potential – whatever your background.

The Liberal Democrats stand for the kind of society which celebrates and protects the rights of our minorities because this, in turn, safeguards the rights of all.

And if you want to send a clear message on 1 May that you don't want the BNP to get a foothold in Hastings, then I urge you to vote for us – the real alternative to the failed Labour and Conservative Councils of recent times.

Give us a chance to show that politics can be done differently.

It's time for a change.

It's time for a Lib Dem Council.

Foster OUT!,

St Leonards 09/04/2008 09:49:40
Nick,

I understand your logic as to why the BNP will almost certainlt take votes from New Labour. Under the leadership of Michael Foster and his lapdog Birch, the people who voted for New Labour have been completely betrayed. However, looking at the candidates in the various wards and the way campaigns appear to be being fought, I have a feeling the LibDems will remain a minority in Hastings. Actually, I suspect you may lose some seats - although you may have some success with Margaret Williams in Conquest? That would be good to see. Independent candidates have often been discussed on these pages and although there are few of them at present I hope they will do well in Castle and Central St Leonards. It shouldn't be too difficult to get Trevor Webb out! I fear the Liberals lack sufficient clout to win many of the new seats they may be contesting and they could actually strengthen New Labour's position by taking votes that may otherwise have gone to strong contenders in some wards. It is clear that no-one wants New Labour, we should all pull together to that end. Personally, I hope people will vote for Independent candidates in Castle and Central and for anything but New Labour everywhere else.
FOSTER OUT!! NEW LABOUR OUT!!! INDEPENDENTS IN!!!!

Love the 'lapdog' comment. I don't think I've heard political invective like that since the Maoists disappeared. How about 'paper tigers' and 'running dogs of imperialism' thats always a good when you run out of sensible ideas. Nobody takes Nick Perry seriously though do they? I mean 'give us a chance' isn't that inspiring is it.

Some good points on the logic of people voting for the BNP. New Labour's policies and incompetence are to my mind are the biggest recruitment factor for the BNP. And yes....from what I've seem it is Labour which will suffer as opposed to the Conservatives. No wonder Michael Foster foams at the mouth at the mere mention of the BNP !

Yes poverty needs to be a priority ...but so is changing the council tax system ( as proposed nationally by Lib/Dems ) and fiscal prudence by our cllrs ! Solutions need to be affordable.

I'm a little worried Nick about your statement about protecting " rights of the minorities " as this is exactly what labour has been doing to the exclusion of rights of the majority. Another BNP factor ! I don't believe that this is the way to achieve social cohesion.

I do very much like your comments on big state interference the freedom to achieve personal potential irrespective of background. Almost what the Conservatives used to believe in.

What are the alternatives ? Michael Foster of the soft shoe shuffle re NHS Option4/5 , Post Office Yes/No etc., or "Please don't ask any questions " Amber.

RECYCLING FIASCO :

Nick..Last week you asked what sort of investigation people were after ? Here's my view :

An independent investigation by persons with acturial and business experience , preferably with the involvement of the relevant finacial investigative branch of the police .

How about it ?

Martin Salcombe would know all about being a lap dog, or is it a nodding dog, as he and his new labour chums agree with everything that Mick Foster says.
Myself and others are sick of this Government and disgusted with the secretive cabinet system locally.
We have had enough of the cronysm between new labour and their Tory chums.
Good luck to the Independent Candidates in central st leonards and castle ward. As a resident of West St leonards I will be voting for libdem as I want....FOSTER and his CRONIES OUT

I hear that there are some summer jobs coming up on the pier. Tea bar operative required- commencing May 2nd- excellent opportunity for no more cups of tea, Martin Salcombe. Also, a circus is missing a clown, so ther's an opening for our current illustrious M.P.
Finally I hear that HBC are opening up a Zoo, in the Town Hall. Peter Pragnell has applied for the position of the ZOO keeper, but we hear that he wanted to do a job share with Godfrey.
The latest announcement, is that a crocodile will be required as the other new labour one used up all his crocodile tears! FOSTER and CRONIES OUT

Let's have no more mincing around with 'New Labour'.
The Government have had more than their pound of flesh, from the hard working tax payers.
It is time to say NO! TO New Labour Rough Trade.
The electorate say....YES. to a fairer trade off. One that will in fact ensure that....FOSTER and his incompetant councillors will be OUT on May 1st.

Good Speech Nick.

However, just a question re the candidate for west st leonards, only my neighbours were asking...Does he/she wear an invisibility cloak as our street has not seen any sign of a Libdem representative, or Libdem leaflet.?

The past 4 years has proven that there is no distance between NewLabour and Old Tories. It is crucial that the two bunches of clowns are kicked out. Hastings hs no option but to give them their marching orders on 1st May.
