An animal rescuer almost died after a snake bit him as he tried to help it.
Trevor Weeks, who founded the East Sussex Wildlife Rescue and Ambulance Service and has devoted years to helping stricken animals across 1066 Country, was trying to free two adders trapped in netting when one lashed out.
Mr Weeks lost consciousness and doctors feared he might not survive after a long-running blood pressure problem made the venom more effective than normal.
Thankfully an anti-venom given to him in hospital in Lewes – where the attack happened – did the trick.
Mr Weeks, who is well known in Hastings, would have been the first person to die of a snake bite in Britain since 1975.
