WHEN a man takes off all his clothes, fixes fake horns to his head and runs through the streets of a famous European city, he's either barking mad or he's trying to make a very serious point.
Ivan Durch, of Wishing Tree Road, St Leonards, is definitely not deranged and he does have a message to get across - although he's not particularly relishing doing it.
For office worker Ivan, 31, is planning to join an estimated 600 animal rights protestors in their fourth annual 'Human Race' on July 5.
It will be the second year in which he has made the 1,500 mile round trip organised by PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) in protest at the Running of the Bulls event in the Spanish city of Pamplona.
For three minutes, six young men are chased through the streets by the bulls on a half-mile stretch. In the afternoon, the same bulls will fight in the city's bullring. All of them die.
To protest at what they see as cruelty to animals, Ivan and his comrades will strip naked, tie red scarves round their necks and fix fake bull horns to their heads before running through the Pamplona streets in an attempt to shock tourists and city officials into ending the world-famous Running of the Bulls event, scheduled for two days after their eye-catching stunt.
Vegan Ivan said: "I am so angry. It's awful that people will pay and get pleasure from seeing animals suffering in such a cruel way."
And he added: "Many tourists haven't a clue about the cruelty that these beautiful animals go through before, after and during the run. And in the ring, they are beaten are stuffed with tranquilisers to weaken them.
He said: "Hopefully, this event will make the Spanish government ban bullfighting in Pamplona."
And he added with a smile: "By getting our kit off again, maybe people will find another way to entertain themselves - without harming any bulls!"
But he admitted that he hoped this would be his last run as, not naturally disposed to public nudity, he
doesn't revel in running starkers through the Spanish streets.
Ivan says he's still looking for sponsorship for the trip. Anyone interested can call him on 854799.
