An unemployed man was caught drink driving after police suspected he was speeding.
Richard Platts, 39, was travelling in a Ford Escort when he was clocked doing 47mph in a 30mph zone in Barnhorn Road.

Prosecutor Alison May said: "Police spoke to the driver of the Escort who was the defendant and his eyes were watering.

"Offic
ers could smell intoxicating liquor.

"The defendant gave his details and said he had drunk a few cans of beer and some vodka when asked if he had been drinking.

"The defendant was then asked about his driving licence and said he only had a provisional one.

"He was then arrested and taken to the police station."#

A test revealed showed that Platts, of Chesterfield Road, Goring-by-Sea, had 53 mg of alcohol in 100 ml of breath. The legal limit is 35.

He appeared before Hastings magistrates in court on Thursday and pleaded guilty to drink driving, driving with no licence and with no insurance.

The incident happened on April 29.

Sam Wingfield, defending, said: "The defendant was going to see someone and had been drinking earlier in the day and did not realise he was over the limit.

"He said he was totally irresponsible and deserves everything he gets.

"He has now lost his job as an electrician because the person he worked for was not happy to have someone with a drink driving conviction."

Magistrates banned Platts from driving for one year, fined him £200, and ordered £60 costs.
