Council bosses have vowed to better consult residents over future parking changes after a review highlighted shortcomings in the authority's prior approach.
Hastings Borough Council met this week to discuss parking proposals made by a cross-party group. Headed by Cllr Andrew Cartwright, the committee made a number of recommendations to the council over how it could better implement future changes to park
ing.

One of these was to set up parking user group made up of residents and members of the local business community.

This would be consulted on any future alterations to parking policy in Hastings.

In recent years changes to parking charges in particular have caused a huge amount of upset locally, with traders in the Old Town and Central St Leonards complaining that high prices were costing them business.

The parking review also urged councillors to make it more clear where it intended to spend the cash generated from parking charges.

Under an agreement with East Sussex County Council, both local authorities get 50 per cent of any surplus cash - a sum which normally reaches five figures. But, while the county council can veto what the borough council spends the cash on, this does not work both ways.

And Cllr Cartwright said he hoped the borough council at least could make it more clear where the money was going in future.

Councillors agreed with the proposals, voting in favour of them at Monday's cabinet meeting.

Speaking at the meeting, council director Richard Homewood said: "The review certainly highlights shortcoming in our consultation with the public. We have learnt lessons."

What do you think about this? Leave your comments.

Pehaps the Councils (both HBC and ESCC) need to understand that "consultation" requires them to "listen" to the public.

Dick Homewood seems to think that "consultation" measn "telling the public what he intends to do".

No wonder these 2 Councils are such an expensive and inefficient shambles.

Consulting the people is the last thing the Borough Council wants to do. My advice is always to use recording equipment if you have to engage in dialogue with Council staff, even if you don't work there. It adds sauce to the bumbling fare of porky pies.

There's nothing to consult about. Traders and residents want the same thing - lower parking charges. This is Hastings Council's latest attempt to divide and rule. This time by setting traders and residents against each other. Their so-called consulation will mislead and antagonise. Fake organisations like HOTRA will be used to pretend to represent the community. The Council's only only goal is to get more money off us through parking charges to pay their pointless wages.

This is what they have done to Hastings.
No pier.
No West Hill lift.
No street lighting.
No cycle path to Bexhill.
No parking.
No public transport.
No fast trains to London.
No crime control.
No action against racism.
No councillors who dare to challenge them.
No financial acumen.
No accountability.
No transparency.
No genuine consultation.
No respect for the people.

Just a few stupid greedy idle and worthless parasites slobbing about in their masonic offices and living off the talent enterprise and labour of the people. The Council should consult us about how we would like it to repay all our money that it has lost through mismanagement. I prefer option A, sack the lot of them. My next choice is B, decuct 95% of their wages at source for the rest of their lives. My final choice is C, give them 50 years community service each. There is no D.

No West (erm East) Hill Lift?

No street lighting?
Are you sure? The streets are lit where I am.

No fast trains to London?
Suppose the council should take over Railtrack and South-beastern and run the line to london. Then they could remove the bottle necks where the line is only single. Perhaps that will speed up the trains. How the council can accomplish this is beyond me.

No crime control?
Isn't reported crime falling here in Hastings?

Who said they don't consult properly. Have a look at Ask the Leader @ http://www.hastings.gov.uk/asktheleader/ “Question 866”. Not only do they consult, but comply with the law and “many” yes “many” residents congratulate them!!!
