Racist graffiti was daubed on fishing huts on The Stade last night (Tuesday night).
Residents were this morning dismayed to discover an anti-Semitic message and a Star of David and Nazi symbols painted in white on the black huts in Rock-a-Nore Road.

Fishermen rent the buildings from Hastings Borough Council, which condemned the vandalism.

Council spokesman Kevin Boorman said: "We are extremely disappointed that this has appeared.

"Immediate action is being taken to remove the graffiti. We have a zero tolerance against such actions and we condemn anything that is racist or anti-semitic."

Käthe Deutsch, of The Croft, spotted the graffiti during a walk.

Describing it as "distasteful and puerile," she believes the anti-semitism not only refers to the conflict in Gaza but also a campaign against the Jerwood Gallery proposal for the Old Town.

"It can also be seen as an indictment of local education in Hastings as the vandals are not capable of spelling Israel correctly," she said.

Mr Boorman said: "I don't know or care whether there are Jewish connections with Jerwood or not, this graffiti is disgraceful."

He added that police are being informed of the incident.

This graffiti is childing and pathetic. It is an affront to the public of Hastings who have to pay for its removal.

There is, however, no doubt that Israel is wrong to continue its "Kll for peace" policy. The current attrocities are unacceptable and they must not profit from their aggression. This violence enhances the arguement of Hamas, that Israel should be aded to the list of "Terrorist" nations and is unfit to be recognised as a state.

The UN should take action against Israel NOW and this should include a ban on arms sales by Britain, France and the USA.

Whatever the reasons for the graffiti ...the perpetrators are sad individuals and a disgrace to Hastings.

They obviously must be a product of the new labour education system. Terrible spelling!

It wouldn't surprise me at all if this offence was the work of some left wing nut job, or one of those stop the war protesters.

A friend of mine had her post removed. She is an artist - intelligent, compassionate - and so was her post, which I read. It criticised Kathe Deutsch for her irresponsible suggestion that those most likely to have graffiti'd the net huts are those who wish to protect the Stade from development. I guess that Kathe or her partner Martyn Saunders-Rawlins must have reported it unsuitable in order to silence rational and courteous criticism of Kathe. When you report a comment unsuitable it remains down until the newspaper looks at it, if they ever do. I have just removed all the post that are abusive towards those who cannot read or are dyslexic. Shame on you Kathe.

I am writing to object to kathe Deutche's attempt to link the grafitti about Israel with those many people who are campaigning to protect the Stade from further development. These people are acting out of love for the stade and are the last people who would deface the Net Huts. I find the allegation irresponsible.

I just sent a long letter but am not sure that I sent it properly so am sending it again. Aplogies if it appears twice.

I am not Jewish but Judaism is part of my recent cultural heritage. I am sensitive to antisemitism and hope I am sensitive to all forms of discrimination.

During the recent holidays I was at lots of parties and celebratory gatherings in the Old Town. I did notice a general unhappiness about the prospect of the building of a gallery on the Stade. As we are a community in the Old Town, we are young and old, rich and poor, newly arrived and longstanding residents. It is clear to me that the majority are opposed to the proposed location of the gallery on the Stade, and that this is because of concerns for our community and environment. It is not because of dislike of anything or anyone. I did not know that Jerwood is connected with Israel or Judaism in any way, and I wonder whether it is even true. I do not know anyone who cares whether Jerwood is connected with Israel or Judaism or not, except apparently Kathe.

Kathe Deutsch's attempt to link antisemitism with those who oppose the location of the Jerwood Gallery on the Stade is very wrong. I am aware that Kathe is a local artist who is keen to see the gallery built on the Stade. I do not disrespect her for this. I do disrespect her for what I see as an attempt to strengthen her cause by misusing the appalling situation that Palestinian and Israeli people are currently suffering.

As for whoever made the graffiti: I am not necessarily opposed to graffiti but the net huts are absolutley not an appropriate vehicle for it. I personally am horrified by the actions of the US and Israeli governments, as I undertand are many Israeli people. I am also horrified by some of the actions of the governments of the US and the UK, for example in Iraq. The swastika is a toxic symbol because of its history. Using it is an act of violence to passers by. Do not use it. In fact, if you take a close look at the
