THE major fire in the Old Town last week demonstrates that we need the right number of firefighters with the right number of appliances and resources in the right place to support our community to ensure that any incidents are attended and dealt with in good time.
The protection of life is the priority with the protection of buildings a close second. Firefighters too need to be reasssured that when they are sent into action they have the best possible protection and that they have the best working practices to draw on.
Cutting numbers of firefighters and appliances seems to me to be reducing resilience locally and that is something I believe we should resist if we are to avoid a major disaster in the future.
