Taking rubbish back to the tip

From: Mrs. M Harman, Brittany Road, Hastings

I am wondering if anyone else has noticed this.

I have paid £55 to be included in the council’s garden waste scheme.

The information on the website clearly states that the waste goes to make varying grades of soil conditioner to be used for landscaping and crop growing. I have been quite willing to pay this in order for the waste to be recycled in this way and to help the environment.

Plus, I only have room for a small compost bin and back problems make carrying it to the tip awkward.

However, I am not happy to pay that amount only to find, as I did this morning, that the garden waste was dumped in the lorry alongside the household waste.

It always used to be collected separately.

Does anyone know if this is going to happen from now on? If so, what is the point of separating the garden waste if it’s not being recycled? It also makes the council’s information untrue.

I know the council is strapped for cash but I would certainly like to have been informed of this change. I would not have committed to another year of having the bin. I entered into this scheme thinking it was environmentally useful. To find it’s not is disappointing and somewhat dishonest.

Needless to say, when I emailed the council’s website to pass my comments on, the email bounced back!

Not impressed, Hastings Borough Council, and although I like to be green environmentally, I don’t think I’m going to be green enough to take up their scheme next year. Bad back or not it will be the tip for me!
