WE were very saddened to read in last week’s Observer of the passing of Ken White. Ken was everything you wrote about and more.
We knew him from our time with Old Centmodians FC and have revived some lovely memories.
Like the time when playing against Icklesham he came on as sub and read a cross coming over from the wing, removed his glasses and stroked the ball in with his trusted left foot. Not bad for a 62-year-old.
When Ken finally stopped playing he worked tirelessly for the club making sure, among other things, that all three teams’ kits were washed, ironed and ready each week.
Something we all took for granted but must have driven his family mad.
He continued to turn up to every match he could and would usually run the line. There was no better sight than to look across after the opposition had scored to see Ken stood there with his flag raised for offside. He was not always right, but it was a wonderful sight. Legend!
Unfortunately we are unable to attend his funeral but would like, through the Observer, to extend our condolences to his family.
He was a lovely man and will be sorely missed.
