Store will be missed by many

It is with real sadness that Stricklands shop is having to close.
I was born in Silverhill and remember when there were shops catering for every thing, starting from the top of Vale Road to Chatham Road there was Bell’s the post office, Dexter’s the grocer, Gowers the greengrocer, Sargeants the hardware store, Burgess the butchers.

Hide AdI believe there was also a newsagent, then on the opposite side on the corner where the bank is now, there was Sayers, a dress and haberdashery shop.
Of course the heart of Silverhill was lost through the devastating raid in March of 1943 when the row of shops from Chatham Road to the Clarence pub were bombed and of course never replaced.
Stricklands shop front brightened up Sedlescombe Road North and will be missed by many.
