IN the Observer on May 8 a headline declared that the local elections presented a new dawn for women councillors – the Labour Party now boasts more women councillors than ever before.
Cllr Godfrey Daniel went on to champion the need for more women on the council. He said it was good to have a mix of young and old, men and women from different backgrounds.
An excellent sentiment indeed until one discovers that the newly-formed planning committee does not have a single female councillor on board. Why is this?
And it has not gone unnoticed that several new boys on the block have been given a place on this committee. What about the new girls on the block?
If this council genuinely wishes to promote diversity it needs to demonstrate this.
Actions speak louder than words. Or is there an opinion that women councillors should have no say on planning issues in this town? Sadly, the word chauvinism comes to mind here.
