Seafront strategy

Have your say

I am sure that there will be further coverage in your paper about the need for responses from townsfolk on the refreshed Seafront Strategy – comments for which must be returned by the end of today (Dec 31)

It seems that there are a number of key points currently to be emphasised.

As someone who lives and works in Castle ward, I will be very pleased to see increased (and low-cost) echelon parking where it is possible to widen the road on the seafront, so that there is less displaced parking up the West Hill.

However I am flabbergasted that the council’s document does not mention more flexible use of the Stade for parking.

It is great to have seen the number of high-quality events during the summer months, but residents and visitors alike cannot believe that the space is not available during those times when it is not required for public events. If the Council needs to seek a legal mandate to do this it should do so as a matter of urgency. This should certainly be in place by the time that we will be celebrating the 950th anniversary of the Battle of Hastings in 2016.

Of course there are other issues which go hand in glove with the re-opening of the Pier next year, including the need for an environmentally-friendly vehicle linking the Old Town and West St Leonards which can drop people at our shiny new Pier. And we mustn’t lose sight of the importance of getting on to the sea from the end of the Pier.

We need to ensure that residents’ voices are heard in this consultation, so I hope readers will write in to seafrontstrategy@hastings.gov.uk.
