Scale of event proves headache

OUR heartfelt thanks to Roger Crouch for taking a small Old Town event to soaring heights over the last few years, he will be missed and we wish him all the best for the future.

Unfortunately the massive scale of the event has created its problems.

We were informed by Kevin Boorman on behalf of Hastings Borough Council and the emergency services that unless the event was scaled down it would not be able to take place.

We at High Street Traders called a meeting to see what could be done.

The local community interest, offers of ideas and help was enormous, and the decision was made to go ahead with what is now known as Hastings Old Town Pirate Family Fun Day.

A full day of events is planned for the enjoyment of all, music, dance, treasure hunt, art projects, competitions, a brand new family friendly Pirate ride in Flamingo Park, 30 Jack Sparrow lookalikes, and The Skeleton Crew and a pirate themed market, accumulating in a Grand Parade led by the best dressed pirates of the day and drummed around the streets of the Old Town.

Of course all off this can only happen if we the organisers and all you pirates make this a safe event.

Our main concern lies with under-age drinking, hence a zero tolerance policy will be in place.

All grown-up pirates will be given a warm welcome in the many wonderful pubs in the Old Town, many of which will have live music on the day.

Pirate Day has become a date in our events calendar, we do not want to lose it.

So on July 20, dress yourselves, your children and the dog in your pirate finery and join in what promises to be a great day.
