Save the town’s heritage assets

AS THE eyes are the window to the soul, so a town’s heritage assets are the face it chooses to show the world.

Last weekend I spent a very pleasant day at the St Leonards Festival but was deeply hurt to learn that Magdalen Road Convent and White Rock Pleasure Gardens are under threat from developers of a housing estate.

The team at Hastings Council are taking the plan seriously, the scale of it is mindboggling. We shouldn’t need to choose between either improving the environment or growing the economy. We should aim to have both, which is why I’m keen to join the Friends of the Convent and White Rock Gardens in their mission to stop the heart being ripped out of St Leonards.

Please, count me in.
