YOU had a letter last week from Elizabeth Nathaniels about the Regency new town of Burtons’ St Leonards.
I have been in touch with her about this as I did not realise just how much of the original ‘new town’ is still identifiable as such.
The concept of a whole new town was novel at the time and its historical importance as an integral area needs to be recognised and incorporated in any plans for future development here. It would appear that present plans being drawn up pay little importance and scant attention to the existence of the ‘new town’ - as it was and still is.
I am sending copies of this to various councillors in the hope that they can help put the ‘new town’ back on the map. Perhaps some of your readers can express their views too.
