New centre is long overdue

Have your say

I read with great interest that at long last a new visitor centre is to be built at the country park.

This is so long overdue, has been talked about for decades and nothing has happened. The present centre, which can only be described as a hut, is totally unsuitable for what it was set up to do.

The volunteer lady that ran it for many years did so under quite difficult circumstances. It was always freezing cold in there, there was no toilet facility so that she had to lock up and walk several hundred yards up the lane to the public toilet.

She also accomodated parties of school children allowing them to sit on the floor of the hut and eat their packed lunch when it rained as there was nowhere else for them to go. I think the readers who have expressed their aversion to a new centre have completely missed the point.

If you want to preserve something precious you need to educate people about it’s importance - especially young people and this is what an education centre will do. By passing on knowledge and understanding there will hopefully be more people interested in maintaining our open spaces in years to come and maybe even volunteering at the country park.

Sometimes it’s a good idea to look at the bigger picture.
