LETTER: Shoppers should lobby the council

I read with interest in the Observer that a petition is circulating requesting Primark to open a store in Hastings.

I suggested exactly that in a letter to you almost exactly a year ago: that Primark should replace the now-closed BHS in Priory Meadow and that this would divert shoppers from Eastbourne to Hastings.

But this will only happen if the Priory Meadow owners and management, backed strongly by Hastings Borough Council (HBC), make a sufficiently attractive business proposition to Primark. Primark is a hard-headed business and it will only be persuaded to open where it will get the premises and financial inducements it seeks.

Therefore, rather than wasting energy on petitioning Primark, the petitioners need urgently to lobby HBC until it listens to what its electorate really want for the improvement of the shopping experience in their town.
