LETTER: Let us have two new runways

Andrea Needham complains about Heathrow expansion, November 11.

We need not only a new runway at Heathrow, we need another one at Gatwick.

The huge amount of fuel spent as planes wait to take off, and even more as they wait over our skies to land, is much more than the extra fuel spent by planes taking off. It only takes about 30 seconds for a plane to become airborne, while many planes wait for 20 minutes to take off and I have spent as long as 45 minutes in a passenger plane circling the South of England while waiting to land.

The same is true for Heathrow. To say nothing of the fuel spent by cars waiting at traffic lights and tailbacks.

We are a trading nation of 63 million people. If we do not export goods and import food, we will starve. If we do not increase our ability to receive goods and send them overseas, rationing will have to start soon. I was a schoolboy during WWII and I know. It only takes a food shortage scare to empty the supermarket shelves.

So let us have new runways at both airports, the new fast railway to the North, more motorways to cope with our traffic, and stop whingeing about carbon emissions. We have a huge amount of countryside already, and it is human activity more than any other, which generates carbon dioxide, the major cause of global warming.
