I am writing to say well done to Nick Perry of Castle Ward Liberal Democrats in his letter to the Observer and his consideration of local residents to the Old Observer Building refurbishment.
Nick kindly emailed me to let me know of his comments, and he seems to have the right thoughts for local people to the development.
Like many others I would love to see this iconic place brought back to life but not at the expense of people living locally.
Working in sheltered accommodation near the OB we received a leaflet about the planning details.
The leaflet quoting the planning committee stated that: “You should also be aware that in reaching a decision the council cannot normally consider the following matters”
The list included:
The fact that the development had already begun. So no comment there then.
The fear that the objectors house may be devalued. So 42 flat dwellers living opposite have no say on the fall in value of their hard earned property.
There is some general anxiety local to the development that after dark noise may add to the fairly ‘boisterous’ activities already experienced in the vicinity, and may escalate, so we are not talking trivia when retired peoples peace and quiet are taken into consideration.
I imagine as has been said before that the council will be jumping up and down with glee at the thought of more council tax coming into their hands but if the proposed development gets under used what will happen then, as has already been considered publicly.
This takes me back to another of the items that won’t be considered and that is ‘a fear that the building may be used for a different purpose in the course of time’. Now that could be interesting.
