Carnival needs help to continue

Aren't we lucky people to have had such a fantastic Old Town Carnival Week which showcased more than one hundred different Old Town based events this year?

Despite some rather unkind weather at the beginning of the week, the town was buzzing as residents and visitors alike enthused at all that was on offer. But such success stories do not happen by accident.

Behind (and some times in front of) the scenes a small band of people dedicated to their community, work tirelessly to give us all so much pleasure and interest. The problem is that this band is getting smaller and also somewhat older.

We have to think of a way of persuading significant numbers of young people that community volunteering can really be rewarding when it results in something as heart-warmingly worthwhile as Hastings Old Town Week.

Almost without exception, voluntary organisations are desperate for more helpers to come forward with energy and new ideas. We have had a great week but some of the stalwarts are reaching the point where they just can’t continue to deliver without a new generation of volunteers coming forward.

So ... Congratulations to all those responsible for Old Town Carnival Week 2016.

Also to those who took part or supported events as it unfolded. If you are reading this and think you might be able to lend a hand next year then please don’t hesitate and contact any of this year’s key organising bodies.
