A YOUTH event organised by churches across Hastings put young people in the limelight last Sunday.
The Hope Youth Event, part of the Hastings Week programme, and sponsored by the Lions Club and Hastings Youth Trust, brought together young people from range of local groups.
The event, which took place at Priory Meadow, was compered by the Hastings Christian Schools Workers, and featured the William Parker Samba Band, puppetry by a group of Scouts, an escapologist and conjuror, and a drumming workshop.
Saving Strike, a local Christian band with a growing national reputation, performed their own music.
As part of the celebrations the Deputy Mayor, Alan Roberts, accompanied by the Hastings Carnival Queen, made presentations to the winners of the 2011 Mayor’s Challenge to youth groups to raise funds and help their communities.
Joint winners this year were the 7th Hastings Scout Troop supporting the Seaview Project with a homeless sleepover, and the youth of St Leonards and St Ethelburga Church who, with a disco, art competition, and a pyjama race, raised funds for Parchment Trust and the Teenage Cancer Trust South East.
