Women and children escape house fire

TWO women jumped out of the window of a burning house after a fire ripped through the lounge.

The blaze started just after 2am yesterday (Sunday) in Eversley Crescent, St Leonards.

Two other people, a man and another woman, as well as three children, escaped unhurt.

They were all taken to the Conquest Hospital and treated for minor injuries and smoke inhalation.

Julie Gilbert-King, fire investigation officer for East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service, said: “The fire started at the front area of the lounge. There were a number of bystanders by the time crews arrived and concerned neighbours had even made attempts to break the front door down.

“Following the fire our crews made house-to-house calls to reassure neighbours and to ensure that these properties had working smoke alarms fitted. An investigation is now underway to determine the cause of the fire.”
