A WOMAN was raped as she walked to work yesterday (Sunday).
The 24-year-old victim, a local woman, was walking along a footpath between Newgate Road and Lower Park Road between 7.30pm and 8pm, when she was attacked.
The attack took place on the steps from the footpath onto Lower Park Road, where she was tapped on the shoulder and asked for directions by the man.
When she said she didn’t know the road he asked for, she was grabbed and raped.
In the struggle she set off her personal alarm which went off briefly.
The man as described as having dark skin, and being of medium build with stubble, and was wearing light coloured trousers or jeans.
A police spokesman said: “This was a very distressing incident and we are doing all we can to support the woman.
“I would appeal to anyone to come forward if they have information that will assist us in tracing this man. Someone may have seen the man acting suspiciously near the footpath or heard the personal alarm. They may have seen the woman talking him or him leaving the scene.
“Detectives are actively investigating this crime and are continuing house to house enquiries. Extra patrols are being made in the area to reassure local people and help answer their queries.
“If anyone has information, however insignificant they think it is, they should contact police on 101 quoting Operation Apartment or the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.”
