Viagra and crisps - an afternoon rubbish collecting on Hastings Beach

VOLUNTEERS joined staff from a seafront aquarium to clean up Hastings beach - clearing bottle tops, crisp packets and even a box of Viagra.

More than a dozen members of the public teamed up with workers from nearby Blue Reef Aquarium for the tidy up - collecting more than 650 bits of rubbish from Rock-a-Nore.

The most common items were crisp packets and sweet wrappers - with almost 200 collected, with pieces of string another common blight on the landscape (117 lengths were found).

The volunteers also picked up bottle caps, cigarette stubs and teabags.

“Rather than just picking up litter each group was asked to record the type of rubbish they found in order to get a better picture of the overall state of our local beaches,” explained Miss McGathy.

“All the rubbish we collected on the day was brought back to the aquarium to be separated out and itemised. After that we will recycle as much of it as we can while the rest will be disposed of safely.”
